Simple Steps for Transformation

 

Definition trans•for•ma•tion [trans-fer-mey-shuh n]: In a running a business context, a process of profound and radical change that orients a running a business in a new direction and takes it to an entirely different level of effectiveness. Unlike ‘turnaround’ (which implies incremental progress on the same plane) transformation implies a basic change of character and little or no resemblance with the past configuration or structure.

Recently I attended a summit in Boulder, Colorado. It was exciting and exhilarating as the room was full with successful women entrepreneurs looking for help in running a business or to start a business. These female entrepreneurs were poised to make big transformations. We all learned a lot of new skills and tools, but even more importantly, every person in the room learned something at very deep levels about themselves.

 

Many of the people had an opportunity to stand up and share with the room what they learned and how it impacted them right there on the spot. As I listened to each one, I immediately saw a pattern emerge that anyone can use to make dramatic changes; in other words, transformations in their lives and running a business.

 

Most of the people spoke about, in one way or another, an intention they had set for their time at the summit. They came with a clear idea of what they wanted to achieve, learn or transform by showing up and investing their time. When they spoke about the intention, it included a big outcome; a major shift in their life and in running a business.

 

By identifying their intention, they actually focused their concentration and their subconscious so that when they could quickly identify the information that they needed in order to make the leap that they did. Without setting an intention, the mind can overlook or miss something as it hasn’t been given an instruction.

 

Intention is purposeful. Setting an intention for a transformation is preparing the way for a quantum leap. Small changes just won’t do. It’s quite the contrary. Quantum leaps demand that we must be willing to be bold and daring for women owned businesses.

 

The next step that emerged was how the people left themselves open to not only receive the information, but for the intended transformation. They took the guard off that we all so often use to screen out information that doesn’t fit with our internal beliefs. This guard causes us to automatically overlook, ignore or scrap life-changing information.

 

This is part of everyone’s paradigm or conditioning. We are taught things that we believe, holding as absolute truth and will defend to the end by creating everything we see in our world so that it fits to those beliefs that we are holding. The stronger the desire for a transformation from the point that one stands right now to a quantum leap demands breaking away from a limiting belief. You cannot keep doing what you’ve always done and expect a different result.

 

This leads to the next step which is declaration. Once each person saw what was holding them back or stuck where they were; they were no longer willing to play it small. Now, armed with their new belief, they staked their claim and declared their desired outcome. It’s this decision that will start drawing whatever they will need to them to move towards the outcome.

 

Declaration is particularly important when you need to get others involved to transform the way you are running a business. People need to know where you as the business owner are taking them.

 

It’s quite possible that you will not know what step you should take at that point, but by declaring the new intention to make a quantum leap, busting out of the trap of doing things the way you’ve always done them and looking for new and better ways of running a business is enough to start moving on. Start getting other people’s buy-in to your new vision. Ask empowering questions to gain support and build on each other’s ideas.

 

Your enthusiasm for making the shift and going after the intended outcome must come across powerfully and strongly. Whenever we go to make changes, people’s fears come up and they will want to stay in their comfort zones. Your desired outcome and commitment to it has to be huge so that people will be moved past their fears and do it anyway.

Coaching Your Staff Tips for Female Entrepreneurs

 

A key skill for female entrepreneurs starting and growing a business today is coaching the best out of your people. Rather than telling them what to do; allow them to determine the best course of action through your coaching. As you are inspiring, encouraging, empowering and motivating others to find answers within them; you’ll be open to some side benefits of feeling re-invigorated and energized

 

  1. Questioning: Ask effective questions and wait for the answers. Dig into the answers instead of just assuming that you know what the person means with their first response. Understand what is behind the first answer. Usually the motivation for any action or behavior is hidden and it several layers down. If someone comes back with an answer that indicates that they don’t know the answer; then say something to the effect: “Well, if you had to guess, what do you think the answer/solution/course of action would be?”
  2. Slow Down: Before saying what you think about a situation or a way to handle something, first make certain that you have drawn out as much as possible from your staff. If your staff is talking fast or giving short answers, change the pace and ask open questions that promote reflection and depth.
  3. Stay Objective: As much as possible, show that you care about the person. Remain impartial while you are empowering them in this process. There will be times when you will feel tested and may want to jump in with your direction to save time, but you will become a better coach and referee if you learn to stay objective.
  4. Be honest: If there’s something that needs to be said, then say with absolute honesty. This isn’t about shattering egos or self-esteem, but it’s vital to be truthful in the softest way with warmth. Put the relationship first with the person and look for how you can best serve the person and the situation at the time. If you see that the commitment level isn’t there with a particular person, look for how you can help them to recognize, explore and make decisions of how they will make changes or deal with this.
  5. Be a Shining Example: Be what you would like to see your staff be while allowing the freedom to make mistakes. No one is perfect and perfectionism leads to protectionism. However, do understand that people will automatically copy the leader. If you see behaviors or patterns that you don’t like, look to see what you are doing while being open and willing to change. People will subconsciously mimic you rather than taking advice to change something that they see you doing.
  6. Own Up to Your Mistakes: Whether they are current or past mistakes, there could be opportunities for your staff to learn from your mistakes. At a minimum, they will learn that they can admit their mistakes, but as a female entrepreneur starting and running a small business, you can use your story to deepen their
  7. understanding. However, follow the process above first.

  8. Keep Raising the Standards: As you gain more experience at using these methods, you’ll become more self-confident and your advice, when you do offer it, will improve too. Your energy will rise because these conversations won’t drain your reserves.

 

You may find at times that you will have to restrain yourself from just jumping in and telling someone what to do as you easily see the solution. It may save you time at the moment; however, the guidance and learning opportunities are lost.

 

Coaching your staff through effective questioning does take longer, but as you are developing and empowering your people; over time, it generates a bigger payback because people are learning this skill so that they can use it with their teams and everyone is learning how to think independently while you successfully grow your business.

Ever Thought About Starting And Growing A Business?

 
It seems that most of us have at one time or another thought about leaving a job and starting a business. Does it sometimes sound like it would be much easier? Or when the big order comes in and you think, “I’m delivering the service/product for my employer. If I had my own business, I could have all the revenue.” Have you ever watched others in your company that don’t have your skills or knowledge, but have a higher position than you do? Or is it the independence that attracts you?

 

The answers to these questions may prompt you to start thinking again about starting a business; but understand this, there’s a whole lot more to consider before quitting your job, taking your savings and registering a business. In fact, many people think registering an entity is actually starting a business but that’s just the legal formality and nothing more. The shocking statistics show that as much as 85% of new businesses fail within the 1st year. How does this happen?

 

You can equate starting a business with other activities such as getting a driver’s license. No one would even consider just going down to the local motor vehicles office, filling out a form, paying money, and then taking the practical and theoretical tests without preparation. Usually you would go out and find an expert or a licensed instructor to teach you everything you need to know in order to operate a vehicle, including the basic mechanics of a car along with a solid understanding of the laws of the road. Along the way, you would get behind the wheel with the instructor sitting next to you and start clocking hours of practice before being allowed to drive alone. You would have the opportunity to ask questions and getting a deeper understanding of the rules and principles of driving.

 

But too often people start businesses without any preparation; jumping in before creating their vision and business plan, hoping that everything with work out in the end. That’s like believing in the tooth fairy. Just as with the driving lessons, it’s critical to invest the time and effort to educate oneself on the essentials of starting a business as preparation is the foundation of success.

 

Recently, I worked with a group of Omani female entrepreneurs that are committed to starting and growing successful businesses based on values, knowledge and insight; both their own and that of other successful female entrepreneurs and business advisers. They analyzed their individual strengths and skills while examining the areas where they’ll either learn new skills or draw on outside help by delegating, recruiting or outsourcing.

 

A new idea, spotting a gap in the market, or improving an existing product/service can all be the basis for starting a business. These budding female entrepreneurs examined opportunities for starting and growing businesses by looking at complementary services or products they could add in the future.

 

After learning the traditional way of doing market research, several of the women preferred using the fast failure method (see this article for more information: http://www.susanbagyura.com/blog/?s=fast+failure#) to uncover critical market knowledge as quickly as possible. When starting and growing a small business, one must develop a pragmatic, action-oriented mentality.

 

We explored the best approaches for starting the businesses, potential channels for distribution along with the advantages and disadvantages of buying an existing business, running a family business, buying or setting up a franchise or as a solopreneur.

 

Along with studying how to write a business plan, raising money or funding for the business, and choosing the right premises; we examined the most common mistakes new business owners make and how to avoid them. Starting a small business can be risky and success is not always guaranteed, but by preparing these female entrepreneurs for many of the challenges, they are stacking the odds in their favor.

 

These female entrepreneurs are poised for success as they have discovered the purpose for their leadership, chosen their preferred leadership styles and competencies, learned the soft skills of leadership while embracing the essential elements of goal setting and goal achieving. Leadership is a process; it’s a life-long journey with continual learning experiences. The best way to learn leadership is to combine basic knowledge with experiences.

 

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this program was the formation of mastermind groups where female entrepreneurs successfully worked together and supported each other throughout the various phases of the process. The creative ideas that came out of those mastermind sessions were astounding.

 

From my aspect, the thrill was in watching these female entrepreneurs grow in confidence. In the free preview of the program, many of these ladies said that they had been thinking about starting a business for a couple of years. Although they really wanted to do it, they were afraid; mainly because they just didn’t know how to get started. By having the chance to learn from a registered business consultant, over a period of time, with other committed and eager peers, these women have laid a solid foundation for their businesses, their personal development and their success.
